Royal & the Serpent Shines On “RAT TRAP I: the blueprint”

Alt-pop singer-songwriter Royal & the Serpent’s new EP, Rat Trap I: the blueprint, is out now! The EP features two brand new songs, “Astroturf” and “One Nation Underdogs.” This release kicks off the first EP in a series of releases called “RAT TRAPS.” with two new songs out each month.

Royal & the Serpent is the stage name for Ryan Santiago, a New Jersey native best known for her indie pop and pop punk tracks. She’s been featured on songs with Demi Lovato, Sleeping With Sirens, and a remix of GAYLE’s viral hit “ABCDEFU.”

Both of the new songs have stunning music videos to support each track. The first of the two songs, “Astroturf,” has a video that reminds us all of high school, and the song itself does too. “Astroturf” shows off Royal’s storytelling prowess, telling a story that is all too familiar. The song focuses on the idea that the grass is always greener on the other side. It’s an emotional yet truthful track, proving that maybe the grass isn’t as green as we think it is.

The other stunning track from RAT TRAP I: the blueprint, “One Nation Underdogs”, is about to be the queer anthem of the summer. Royal presents the new song as an ode to anyone who has ever felt like the underdog. The song starts off with a revised version of the United States’ national anthem, saying:

“I pledge allegiance to the drag, and the united gays of America. To safety in public, from queer to trans, one nation, underdogs, not invisible, with liberty, and justice for all.”

– “One Nation Underdogs”, Royal & the Serpent

This portion of the song inspires hope among queer audiences, empowering anyone who listens to it. This release also comes ahead of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, starting June 1st. The new track will surely be a hit this summer, perfect for celebrating all month long.

Royal & the Serpent will be touring alongside Fall Out Boy this summer, with dates in Chicago, New York, and two shows in Los Angeles at the BMO Stadium. Get tickets to see Royal & the Serpent supporting Fall Out Boy here!
