Alternative pop and rock artist Royal and the Serpent is continuing her RAT TRAP saga with her second double release, RAT TRAP 2: the burn. The two-track release features two brand new songs, “JUNKIE” and “SLUG,” both with accompanying music videos.

The New Jersey native has been releasing double-sided singles since the end of May, with the first being RAT TRAP 1: the blueprint. The first in the saga featured “Astroturf” and LGBTQ+ anthem “One Nation Underdogs,” released just in time for Pride Month. Each new release further explores a plot line that is being created through Royal’s music, which she lovingly calls the “royalverse.”

“OUCH! what was that?? oh! LOVE! yeah… sometimes it stings. welcome to trap 2 — the continuation of the RAT TRAP series where our lead character falls for a boy that can’t help but break her heart (over and over again). I am so excited to share these songs and continue this story — thank you immensely for your time and consideration, these songs are from a deep place in my heart and I cannot wait to keep feeding the plot line.”

– Royal and the Serpent

This edition of the RAT TRAP saga features two contrasting singles, “JUNKIE” and “SLUG.” The first tells a story of a toxic love that makes the narrator feel addicted to the other person’s love. “JUNKIE” is a classic pop-rock song featuring a grungy guitar and Royal’s unique vocals.

“SLUG” is much more aggressive than its counterpart, where the main character finally leaves her lover once and for all. The song is very reminiscent of 1990s grunge rock and early 2000s pop-punk. The two songs tell a story together of being in an unhealthy relationship and then leaving the other person only to realize how terrible they truly were.

Royal and the Serpent writes her lyrics through a space of vulnerability, unafraid to write exactly what she wants to. The RAT TRAP series is following the release of her two 2022 EPs, IF I DIED WOULD ANYONE CARE and Happiness Is An Inside Job. The two EPs shine a light on Royal’s personal life, letting us into some of the darkest parts of her mind.

Fans are consistently drawn to Royal’s honesty and vulnerability that she shares through her music, making her one of the most unique artists in the music industry right now. We cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next month with the next installment of the RAT TRAP saga.

Get tickets to see Royal and the Serpent supporting Fall Out Boy on their “So Much For (Tour) Dust” Tour. She will also be visiting record stores across the country in Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia. Check out Royal and the Serpent’s website for more info.
