notfortheo’s EP “half life” Proves the Trio Is the Next Hottest Chillwave Artist

Rising Toronto trio notfortheo unleashed their debut EP, “half life,” last week, which features four chillwave-dominant tracks that the group has been publishing one by one since August. Although notfortheo released the EP during a season when Christmasphiles are turning up their Michael Bublé, “halflife” reminds heliophiles yearning for those hot summer days that the beach-weather season is coming.

On a serious note, “halflife” is an equivocal record with notes of wistfulness and pleasure. “half life” enables listeners to enjoy its musical aspects while embracing tranquility. It encourages listeners to embark mentally on whatever adventure each song takes on.

“just a little bit” is the first track and combines synth-pop with a bit of funk. While the tune is simple, it’s the groovy rhythm many may find enticing.

The second track, “interlock,” includes a superb, trippy music video. With a mixture of indie-pop, alternative, rap, and chillwave, the song is an infectious tune. “interlock” emits beach vibes with the soft rap in the verses and the rhythm.

“down” comprises a ’60s-style rhythm and is the smoothest song on “half life.” While psychedelia vibes are apparent in the entire record, “down” is the main song that gives off that vibe with its trance-like instrumentals.

“y I do” has an incredible beat and strong dynamics that entices the listener. Although the layers of synths are terrific, the lead and backing vocals steal the attention. While “y I do’ may be the longest song on the track, it is the shortest since it begins to fade out around the 2:20 mark.

For their first EP, it’s remarkable how the band encaptured the microgenre’s sound while pushing it further. Furthermore, they incorporated other genres into the record, showing they’re a seasoned band.

notfortheo is already receiving high praise from well-known publications like Complex and The Fader, which is beyond incredible since they’re starting.

It’s only the beginning for the group, and we can’t wait to hear more from them. Listen to “half life” and follow notfortheo on Instagram, Twitter, and Spotify.
