Bluhm Explores The Complex Dynamics Of Relationships In Newest Single, “You Took It”

Fall is a fantastic time to sit back and reflect as the year starts coming to a close. Sometimes, this reflection requires a playlist consisting of more laid-back music with a rawness that can remove the listener from reality and into the deep recesses of the mind. One such track that belongs on this playlist is “You Took It” by Bluhm.

“You Took It” is about a relationship where two people aren’t on the same page. One person wants something more, while the other wants to leave. The dream pop soundscape brings a more melancholy feel, as, after the anger and disappointment fade, all that is left are the lessons from the past. These concepts are emphasized in the slow-tempo instrumental and the soft vocals of lead singer Claire Bluhm.

Listen to “You Took It” below:

Along with the instrumental and vocal performance, the song’s lyrics portray this part of healing after the end of a relationship. It’s especially apparent at the end of the track, as the vocals overlap, singing two different verses. The verse at the forefront is the song’s last verse, “Somebody wants to be your baby/ Somebody wants to tell me maybe/ Someday it’s gonna kill you, baby.” In the background, the second half of the chorus, “Did you think you had someone?/What are you waiting for the right thing/ Where were you when you had to give in,” sounds like it’s almost trying to push itself in front of the main vocal. The overlapping vocals create an interesting dynamic as if the two different thoughts are trying to fight to be at the forefront.

Bluhm is based in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, consisting of Claire Bluhm on vocals and the guitar and Cameron John Marion, a multi-instrumentalist and producer. All of Bluhm’s songs are written, recorded, and produced by Bluhm and Marion in their home studio, adding another layer of rawness to their musical catalog.
