Mia Rodriguez’s “I Luv U” Puts A Dark Twist On Love

Australian pop singer Mia Rodriguez is taking the world by storm in 2022, with her festival performances, touring, and the release of singles such as “Superglue.” Now, Rodriguez has dropped her latest single, “I Luv You,” which comes across as a sweet and innocent love song, but with a twist. The heavy bass and melody change in the chorus emphasize this dark side of love going hand in hand with its more innocent depiction, along with lyrics such as, “Think I’m coming on too strong/With my hands around your neck/ Only wanna love you wrong/ Cause at least you won’t forget/ If you find another one/ She’s a patch of Nicorette/ And I’m the cigarette.”

Rodriguez further shares the meaning behind, “I Luv You,”

“Loving people is hard, sometimes it can hurt, so much so that it tears emotions in two different directions. [The lyric] “I love you so much I want to punch you in the face” isn’t literal but it symbolizes the overwhelming feelings which you can be impacted by from love.”

Listen to “I Luv You” below:

The setting of the music video is a high school hallway, where Rodriguez, clad in a school uniform, walks in sunny yellow lighting surrounded by other students. Then, as the chorus hits, the lighting in the hallway switches to a cool blue tone with green flickering lights, and Rodriguez is alone. The bright hallway scenes show Mia Rodriguez in more of a puppy love state, while the scenes in the blue hallway demonstrate the dark side of love, including a shot of her punching a hole in her locker. At one point, Rodriguez is sitting on the floor in the middle of the hallway, switching between her in the bright hallway and her in the blue hallway covered in blood. When shooting the music video for “I Luv You,” Mia states that,

“It was fun to take this video into a darker place that symbolizes the overwhelming feelings that can be triggered by love.”
