Arlie Release The Music Video For Their Psychedelic Hit “cool”
After the release of their debut album Break The Curse, psychedelic pop band Arlie released the music video for the track “cool.” “cool” was a stand-out hit from Break The Curse, with its retro, psychedelic vibes that are reminiscent of the Beatles with a 90s twist.
Listen to “cool” below:
Nathaniel Banks, the singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist behind Arlie’s origins, shared that the inspiration for “cool” is,
“This is one of those songs that formed around a line that just popped into my head out of nowhere, with full musical vision in mind. The main part wanted to feel like 10 Beatles songs on top of each other but filtered through more modern psychedelic tonal sensibilities. Like I do in a lot of my songwriting, I’m sort of ridiculing myself in these lyrics: ‘people seem to think I’m cool sometimes when we first meet, I don’t know why, it’s very strange…’”
The music video, directed by Gabe Drechsler, is set against a lofi-green screen and features Banks dressed as various characters, including a mad scientist who looks similar to Albert Einstein, a hero with a red cape, and more. The fun playful atmosphere of the music video complements “cool,” especially as the graininess of the video and the flash of the blue stripe across the top of the screen is similar to a lot of colored TV shows back in the late 60s and early 70s. The visuals further emphasize the song’s roots in psychedelic rock and pop, while still maintaining a contemporary feel through other elements such as the dances that Banks perform (i.e. the flossing he does as a mad scientist).
