Sara Kays’ “Picture of You” and the Internal Struggles of Self Image

Sara Kays, the breakout artist with over 100 million streams on her last single, “Remember That Night?”, releases the uniquely comforting “Picture of You.” The 22-year-old artist, known for her ability to speak of internal struggles of isolation, body image, and fractured family, delivers yet another piece that will offer listeners relief through her songcraft.

“Picture of You” is a gentle song with a soft melody that juxtaposes the weight on the topic of self-image in photographs, following the pattern of many of her previous releases. Although many artists have covered social anxiety or self-image topics, Kays presents the desire to remain unseen and off camera with detail and poetic grace like no other. She sings,

. . . So I know you wanna keep this memory

can you keep it in the back of your head

cause when I see it in a week

I’ll wish I was dead

I’ll wish I took a picture of you instead . . .

Kays simply states, “I wrote this song about not wanting to be in pictures all the time because I know I’m not going to like how I look in them. Sometimes I’d rather just keep a memory in my head.”
