Paramore Fittingly Devours “The News” In Their Latest Sublime Track + Music Video

Two weeks ago, three-piece band Paramore dropped the latest addition to their highly anticipated sixth studio album, This Is Why. “The News” is the second song from the pending album to be released to the public—the first being “This Is Why.” And so far, one could gather the direction the iconic band is going in because the first single addresses how cruel and egotistical the world has become. The second single addresses how overly consumed the world is with news, which the lyrics are pretty self explanatory.

“The News is one of those songs that came together pretty quickly and felt exciting from the start. It feels like a happy medium between classic Paramore angst and bringing in some influences we’ve always had but never exploited. Watching Zac track drums for this one was one of my favorite memories from the studio. Lyrically, it probably explains itself. The 24-hr news cycle is just impossible to comprehend. And I feel a pang of guilt when I unplug to protect my headspace. The common reaction, or non-reaction, seems to be dissociation. Not one of us is innocent of that, and who could blame us?”

Hayley Williams

There are numerous songs that touch on mental health issues, but it’s intrepid of Paramore to link the constant severity of breaking news to the deterioration of many people’s mental health.

Hayley Williams proves this in the first verse:

“War, a war, a war on the far side / On the other side of the planet / And I’ve got war, a war, a war right behind my eyes / Right behind them just like a headache.”

The entire duration of “The News,” the band emphasizes the difficulty disposing of the harsh news because once it’s in your brain you can’t unsee it.

“Shut your eyes, but it won’t go away / Turn on, turn off the news.”

Paramore maintains their signature angsty sound in the track while simultaneously adding new flavors. The verses and chorus carries the typical Paramore angst but the prechoruses allow Hayley to flaunt her soulful, smooth vocals.
