Oliver Tree Extinguishes An Old Flame With New Single ‘I Hate You’

The musically sensational and genre-defying artist, Oliver Tree, has just released his newest single “I Hate You” from the upcoming, Cowboy Tears (Deluxe), an extended version his sophomore effort, which came out in February of this year. The album follows his extremely well-received full-length debut, Ugly is Beautiful, which ascended to #1 on Billboard’s “Top Rock Albums” and “Top Alternative Albums” with its early 2020 release as well as a spot in the top 15 on the overall SoundScan/Billboard 200.

The self-proclaimed walking, talking meme is known for his over-the-top antics, his entirely original blend of musical genres, and his comical appearance, which can, at times, be strikingly resemblant of the villain Vector from Despicable Me or Joe Exotic of the infamous Tiger King docuseries. Whether he is sporting Lloyd Christmas’s signature bowl cut or a blonde mullet and handlebar mustache is irrelevant since Trees has successfully mastered the unique artistry of blending nearly every genre imaginable into one. And he’s seemingly gotten away with it, nonetheless. “I Hate You” is merely a continuance of the overarching theme of the album — Heartbreak.

“The album is simply about embracing crying,” Trees tells Variety in an interview earlier this year. “There are some really big ideas. I studied Pink Floyd and they say a great album covers a wide span of themes. On Cowboy Tears, you have songs about money, time, religion and addiction.”

Cowboy Tears was produced by Oliver Tree along with his longtime collaborators Whethan (The Chainsmokers, Dua Lipa, Tom Morello) and Casey Mattson, and its subsequent tour — which will kick off August 4 in San Diego, CA and wrap up October 1 in Santa Cruz, CA — in support of the deluxe release has been much anticipated for some time coming. Singer/songwriter JAWNY and alternative sensation HUDDY will be the featured opening acts for the Cowboy Tears: One Last Ride tour.
