JAPANESE BREAKFAST CLOSES OUT SNL SEASON 47 WITH KNOCKOUT PERFORMANCE
Last Saturday night, two-time Grammy award-nominated artist Japanese Breakfast took the legendary SNL stage for the show’s Season 47 finale. Hosted by Natasha Lyone, the episode aired last Saturday, May 21st. Japanese Breakfast graced her live audience with two tracks off her most recent album Jubilee, “Be Sweet” and “Paprika.” Check out her performances of each below.
Dreamlike set design and Michelle Zauner’s natural stage appeal made her performance a magically-infused hit––the best way SNL could have hoped to close out Season 47. The alt-pop band is headed by Korean-American singer, director, and author Michelle Zauner. A solo moniker for the Philadelphia musician, Japanese Breakfast began as a song-a-day challenge for Zauner during her break from her indie rock band Lig Big League.
Japanese Breakfast released her third studio album Jubilee last June with Dead Oceans, which promptly soared to the top of the charts to become one of the most praised albums of the year. Jubilee landed Japanese Breakfast two Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Alternative, as well as placement on Best Of 2021 lists from Rolling Stone, People Magazine, Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, NPR, Wallstreet Journal, The Ringer, SPIN, Esquire, Vulture, The AV Club, Paste, Cosmopolitan, UPROXX, Consequence of Sound, Slant and Hypebeast, amongst others. The album was also voted the #1 album of the year on NPR’s Listeners’ Poll, #1 on UPROXX’s Critics’ Poll, and its lead single “Be Sweet” was voted the #1 song of the year on Pitchfork’s Readers’ Poll.

In addition to Jubilee and the Japanese Breakfast side of things, 2021 also saw Zauner publish New York Times bestseller Crying in H Mart (it’s been on the list for 42 weeks!). You can purchase the title here. Zauner is an extremely talented, multi-faceted artist leading her generation with prowess; and while it may have been Pete Davidson’s last show with SNL, Japanese Breakfast still managed to take the cake. Hats off to you, Michelle.
Japanese Breakfast just kicked off her worldwide tour with the Linda Lindas, Yo La Tengo & Cate Le Bon, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Florence + The Machine. Tour dates below!
