In an autobiographical R&B single, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Maddy Brown makes her debut with “Wiser,” an intimate display of vulnerability paired with a new wiser outlook on relationships. Teaming up with multi-talented producer and singer/songwriter Andrew Owens (The Millenial Club, andreas owens, clay house), Maddy centers the song around her personal experience of coming to terms with the truth that her long-term relationship was not right for her.

Maddy Brown (Madelyn Wright Brown) found her voice through many different genres of music, which ultimately shaped her musical direction in the form of a unique blending of choral harmonies, jazz-influenced melodies, and pop-infused R&B instrumentals. With an exceptional familial background in music, intensive vocal and opera training, and in-depth jazz studies, Maddy’s singing and songwriting abilities are largely influenced by her time as a voice major at the Cal State Fullerton School of Music. Though she gained essential skills and knowledge musically during her time in music school, Maddy often found herself overworked, struggling with writer’s block, and burnt out creatively. She finally found space throughout the pandemic — both in time and emotions — to finally express and voice her thoughts through her own music as Maddy Brown.

“Wiser” is just a prelude to the sonic direction in Maddy’s upcoming 6-track pop-infused R&B debut EP, slated to release this summer. It details finding your footing post-breakup, recognizing your growth and worth, and ultimately becoming empowered to be straightforward and voice your emotions. A representation of recognizing her needs within a relationship, Maddy openly expresses her repressed feelings and honors her experience through her songwriting process. She shares,

I hope people can take “Wiser” as their own source of empowerment. Voice how you feel, recognize your worth, and be empowered to have high expectations for those who end up having the privilege to be in your life.

Maddy’s raw and straight-to-the-point lyricism, masterful vocal control and delivery, and soulful R&B-centric production reflect the wide range of genres that have influenced her music throughout her life. Filled with dulcet tones, Maddy uses her songwriting abilities to reflect her standing thoughts from a place of understanding. Sultry basslines create a magnetic atmosphere that well complements the calmness and introspection evident in Maddy’s lyrics and vocals. There’s an undeniable draw that listeners can find in Maddy, both in how relatable the message of “Wiser” is as well as how alluring her artistic sound is. There is no doubt that Maddy Brown is an artist to watch as she continues on her professional journey, so be sure to stay tuned!
