Born and raised in New York emerging artist Justy pulls inspiration from the likes of Amy Whinehouse, NoName and Anderson Paak. Her music fuses traditional jazz elements with modern lo-fi beats, and her transparent and raw lyricism showcases her writing skills. Justy’s voice is a perfect blend of soft, whispery and raspy, light and airy but full and slow-moving like smooth honey, sure to raise the goosebumps on your arms.

This independent artist brings great talent to the table and a fresh perspective with her poetic lyrics touching on serious and personal topics. Justy has gained some traction in Britain, even collaborating with Kwame Kwaten on the two single project for “Try” (2018) and “L8R” (2019). Her debut project Soul Food, the Precede covers love, loss, insecurities ambition in a mature and flavorful way. This self-proclaimed “old soul” is an artist to keep your ears open for, especially as her debut album in the works.

Justy’s latest single “Cool” is a whole entire rainy day mood. Jazzy guitar mixed with a little bit of trumpet and crisp saxophone melodies accompany a lo-fi beat, giving the song an old mixtape sound. The deliciously groovy and ambient music serves as the perfect soundtrack to walking in the rain with your hood pulled up. The poetic lyrics are like all the thoughts clouding your head while you try to drown everything out via your ear buds.

Whether “Cool” is about a particular person and experience, or if it’s a more general commentary on how she perceives the numbness to pain in the world is up for interpretation and introspection. The song gets a point across, to say the least; it’s tasteful, deep, raw and beautiful, and very well composed.

Below are the lyrics written out to be enjoyed as a more intimate reading experience. “Cool” has also earned a spot on our Nü Qü playlist, so go give Justy some love on Spotify this week in celebration of her newest release!

Cool by Justy –

“Refrain
Cause I notice in the morning,
I aint tripping over you
When you hurt me
I don’t worry
Cause you know it’s nothing new
Cause you know it’s nothing new
Cause you know it’s nothing new

Verse
We could talk shit if we have to
Ride around the city with a bag full
Money in the air, money in the air
I don’t really care, I don’t fucking care
I been saving up my pain
Cashing in on rainy days
Man this year has really changed
And yet we’re all just still the same
I guess it’s

Chorus
Cool,
When you’re hurting inside but it don’t even matter
Cool,
Keep a girl by your side but you don’t really love her
Cool,
If I gave you the world, no it still wouldn’t
Matter,
Matter
Matt-

Verse
No love lost
No love gained
Just sweet talk
Lets play games
I’m broken
You’re battered
Lets exchange family matter
Touch me like i might matter
Choose love like it’s the latter
Happily ever after
Never got my ending chapter
Chorus
Cool,
When you’re hurting inside but it don’t even matter
Cool,
Keep a girl by your side but you don’t really love her
Cool,
If I gave you the world, no it still wouldn’t
Matter,
Matter
Matt-

(Eartha Kitt Interlude)

Chorus
Cool,
When you’re hurting inside but it don’t even matter
Cool,
Keep a girl by your side but you don’t really love her
Cool,
If I gave you the world, no it still wouldn’t
Matter,
Matter
Matt-

Refrain
Cause I notice in the morning,
I aint tripping over you
When you hurt me
I don’t worry
Cause you know it’s nothing new
