Indietronica band Steep Steps plumbs the depths of dark musicality with “The Closest”

The Baltimore, MD electronica/dream-pop project, Steep Steps, is a great listen for anyone looking to scratch that dark, indie-electronic itch. Their latest single, “The Closest,” features Kéren Tayar and her soulful vocals.

Steep Steps, who has previously scored for film and television, is known for their signature, self-styled “haunting female vocals with layers of analog synths, indie guitar tones, and creative production.” “The Closest” is no exception. This dreamy, indietronica synaesthesia explores the theme of temporary love with a tender nihilism. Tayar’s ethereal vocals accentuate the innately sorrowful nature of the song as the instrumentals, subtle in their destructive and echoing nature, complement her vocal stylings.

“The Closest” could almost be hailed as a flagship song. It contains all the elements that makes Steep Steps the powerhouse of dark indietronica and expands upon them in this constantly changing, evolving soundscape that will have you hitting replay just to experience it again.

Steep Steps first came into being in 2017, when they provided the orchestral score for Game of Thrones (In the Upside Down.) Producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Tony Correlli has also orchestrated many scores for film and television, as well as arranging for hundreds of artists. Most of the fundamentals of Steep Steps could be attributed to the singular sounds of other accredited artists, such as Lana Del Rey, Purity Ring, Chvrches and Massive Attack. Amelia Vandergast, the Executive Editor at A&R Factory, commented that “good music leaves you speechless; Steep Steps left me breathless with the elemental ingenuity, deep artistic reverence and lyrics which cry out for a re-spark of passion in The Closest.” Now signed by the sync rep, Vince Quintero, Steep Steps continues to break its boundaries in order to reach new heights.
