Spacey Jane and Benee Collab on “Lots of Nothing”
Spacey Jane and Benee join forces on “Lots of Nothing”, with Benee providing some extra vocals to the band’s original release. The song had originally been released in June 2021 as the lead single off the album Here Comes Everybody. The newer version of the song not only includes a dreamy verse from Benee but also has new production from Kon Kersting.
Spacey Jane and Benee hail from Australia and New Zealand respectively. Following their formation in 2016, Spacey Jane have gone on to become one of Australia’s favorite bands. The indie rock outfit released their first studio album, Sunlight, in 2020, which would go on to peak at number two on the ARIA Charts. They have gone on to release another studio album, Here Comes Everybody in 2022, which would go one step further than Sunlight and go on to top the ARIA Charts.
Citing acts such as Courtney Barett and The Strokes as inspirations, Spacey Jane make jangly indie rock that bridges indie with alternative genres such as shoegaze. Spacey Jane have mentioned how they view music as a method of healing and a great tool to reach catharsis.
Benee is the stage name for Stella Rose Benett. Benee took guitar and saxophone classes in school, before dropping music to briefly consider pursuing a career in water polo. Benee would later resume music and begin to release music via Soundcloud. She would begin to gain traction in 2019, before achieving mainstream success in 2020 with the song “Supalonely” featuring Gus Dapperton. She would go on to release her first and only studio album later that year, titled Hey U X.
“Lots of Nothing” includes warm homey guitars and playful drums. Just a few seconds into the song, we can hear Caleb Harper’s anguish-tinged vocals. Benee joins in for a guest feature a few minutes in. Together they portray two sides of a struggling relationship. On the chorus, Harper states how he desperately wants to try and save this relationship, but his head is devoid of any ideas and is completely empty.
