Allison Russell’s Renowned Solo Album “Outside Child” Wins Album Of The Year At The Americana Music Awards
The talented and indomitable singer-songwriter Allison Russell won Album of the Year at the Americana Music Awards on Sept. 15, 2022, for her debut album, Outside Child. The album was released on May 21, 2021.
The award show occurred in Nashville, Tennesee, at the Ryman Auditorium, where Allison took the stage to collect her award and perform the emotional song “You’re Not Alone” with Americana singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile.
Additionally, Allison was nominated for “Artist of the Year” and “Song of the Year” for her single, “Persephone.” She was one of the sole three artists to obtain as many as three nominations. The Americana award adds to the singer’s growing list of accolades. She has won two International Folk Music Awards and a Juno Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year in 2022. In 2021, she achieved three Canadian Folk Music Awards and two UK Americana Music Awards.
Receiving nominations for prestigious music awards is significant because they give the nod to the artist’s artistry and notify them that they’re doing something right. The “4th Day Prayer” singer achieved three Grammy ®️ Award nominations and two Americana Awards in 2021.
Allison performed on live TV talk shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ellen, Late Night With Stephen Colbert, and CBS This Morning. She made her Opry debut and will make an appearance at the Austin City Limits on Oct. 22.
On top of creating hits, Allison uses her craft to give back. The singer, poet, and activist co-founded Our Native Daughters, a four-piece group of Black female banjo players (Amythyst Kiah, Allison, Leyla McCalla, and Rhiannon Giddens) that creates songs to tell the stories of Black Americans and promote solidarity. She’s also a part of the Birds of Chicago group, which includes her and her husband, JT Nero (Jeremy Lindsay).
She has her memoir about what inspired her to create Outside Child.
