When we think of progressive rock and symphonic metal, we usually think of bands like Nightwish, Draconian, and Within Temptation hailing from Europe. Argovia has steadily built one of the strongest reputations in the Latin American prog scene, and with “Primal Repetition,” recorded between Bogotá, Santiago de Chile, and the legendary Sandlane Recording Facilities in the Netherlands, they make a case that speaks for itself.
Released via Presagio Records, “Primal Repetition” is the band’s most ambitious work yet. Produced in over 18 months, the album features impressive production by Germán Vergara (Aisles), Ani Guillén, and Carlos Arminio; mixing by Fernando Cubillos; and mastering by Steve Kitch (The Pineapple Thief). It also includes a special guest appearance from Ross Jennings of Haken on the track “Ebb & Flow.”
The album’s concept runs deep through every track. Built around the tension between what we try to leave behind and what inevitably returns. It moves through grief, disconnection, migration, and the stubborn persistence of love and memory, never losing sight of the emotional core beneath the technical ambition.
“Primal Repetition” delivers eleven strong songs that blend gothic and metal elements with Latin American rhythms, alongside Andean and Afro-Caribbean touches, and modern progressive songwriting.
“The Same River” kicks things off perfectly with powerful guitar riffs and Ani Guillén’s commanding vocals, channeling the longing of someone searching for a connection that transcends time and memory. “Mountains” lets the drums breathe and drives the song forward, capturing the vertigo of feeling alive again after a long period of stillness. “Lethean Light” creates an almost heavenly atmosphere with classical piano and angelic backing chants, rebelling against the idea of forgetting a great love and clinging instead to everything that once felt true.

Other standout moments include the fiery “Spark,” built around the idea of bonds so persistent they reignite no matter the distance or circumstance. The emotionally charged “Ebb & Flow” features Haken’s Ross Jennings in a vulnerable confrontation with the fragile side of the self, while “Alas de Sal,” the only track sung in Spanish, blends Andean sonorities and electronic sounds to explore the pain of uprooting and the fragility of freedom. The album closes beautifully with “Where Do We Go,” sitting with the existential questions that have no easy answers and leaving a lasting impression.
While some albums are about a moment, “Primal Repetition” is about every moment that keeps coming back, the ones you thought you had left behind, the ones that turn out to define you. Argovia made a record that understands that feeling from the inside, and it shows.
