Top Music Videos This Week: Feeling Surreal
It is an amazing feeling when a song can truly transport you. Whether that be to a favorite place or moment, or just inspire a hypnotic feeling, some songs simply feel surreal. Each of the artists for this week’s picks love to explore the experimental and psychedelic nature of their music. Paired with cinematic or borderline hallucinogenic music videos, this week’s top videos are guaranteed to entrance you.
“The Void” by Spiritbox
Spiritbox’s single “The Void” has been a hypnotizing addition to the band’s first US tour. The song feels like it’s bending reality, with lead singer Courtney LaPlante’s mesmerizing vocals blend with the band’s rough and metal sound. The song has also been paired with animated visuals that perfectly capture its surreal and almost other-worldly sound. After releasing their debut album Eternal Blue in 2021, Spiritbox has been making their presence known in the metal community, and this single only continues to solidify that.
“Chunker” by Hail The Sun
Hail The Sun explores vanity, existentialism, and what it means to be human in their new single “Chunker.” It’s no secret that the band doesn’t shy away from exploring dark and difficult themes, with their previous albums often delving into the depths of their emotional ranges. That being said, “Chunker”and their upcoming album Divine Inner Tension are taking a different route and using their music to ponder their existence in a more holistic sense. “Everything comes from within, so I thought that maybe I don’t have to suffer to feel inspired,” said lead vocalist Donovan Melero. Make sure to pre-order Divine Inner Tension here.
“Block of Ice” by Thee Oh Sees
Over a decade after Thee Oh Sees’ first performance at Austin Psych Fest, the band is now releasing an album made entirely of live recordings from the night’s performances called Live at Levitation. This collection includes their performance of “Block of Ice,” with video accompaniment that captures the band in 12-minute serenade to the audience, becoming progressively more entranced and melded to the music, all while displaying their impeccable musical abilities. The album is now available, along with repressings of a variety of their other iconic albums, all of which can be found here, along with upcoming dates for the band’s tour.
“LosT” by Bring Me The Horizon
Bring Me The Horizon takes blood, gore, and exploding doctors to the next level in the music video for their single “LosT.” This highly anticipated release follows other singles by band as a part of their Post Human series. The British band explores concepts of self-loathing and masochism in this new release, all under the umbrella of a chaos filled hospital. This chaos is exactly what Bring Me The Horizon does best, so check out their upcoming tour dates here.
“ox-eye” by Califone
Califone’s experimental techniques take a new form in “ox-eye,” a surrealist dream of intercut film footage and graphics that blend seamlessly with the band’s soft and moody sound. Edited and directed by Califone’s creator Tim Rutili and Rachel Blumberg, the whole thing feels like a psychedelic hallucination, transporting viewers and listeners into another realm of peaceful enjoyment, perfect for the band’s unique sound. Calfione’s new album villagers, on which “ox-eye” is featured, is now available everywhere. The band will also be touring this summer, so make sure to grab tickets here.
