Reminiscent of old-school P!nk – I’m talking M!ssundaztood days – with a funky twist is the essence of “Co Star,” the dazzling first taste of Perth based singer/producer Phoebe Gunson’s debut upcoming album. Going by the stage persona Your Girl Pho, she struts her stuff in this swanky neo-soul tune showcasing a phat bass groove that compliments her beautiful, saucy Australian accent tastefully.
‘Co Star’ is a sophisticated dance floor anthem inspired by the hyper-personalized astrology app of the same name. Specifically the app’s user specific yet totally vague push notifications, which Phoebe received one day (during a mercury retrograde) prompting the hook of the song, “someone wants what you’ve got”.
About the single “Co Star”
Often backed by a 4-piece band, including two saxophones and drum set, listeners are in for a dynamic treat of playful instrumentation. Her energetic and wide vocal range gets listeners moving and grooving in classic indietronica pop fashion, which is empowered and free. Your Girl Pho brings a fresh, colorful electro-pop sound full of sass and power, an infectious musical concoction.
In 2019 Your Girl Pho was acknowledged with the West Australian Music award for the “Best Live Electronic Act,” which is quite a high honor! It’s no surprise her previous singles “Five-Thirty PM” and “Don’t Wanna” sat at #1 in the AMRAP metro download charts Nationally, and then she was not soon later picked up by Untitled Group’s tastemaker label Daily Nightly near the end of 2020.
Your Girl Pho is definitely an artist I’ll be keeping my eye on for music festival lineups once artists and fans are able to safely gather internationally again! Until then, I’ll jam to “Co Star” in my Nü Qü playlist.
