Samaki lets go and sinks deeper into a chillwave haven in”hartsfield”

The sound of a lone synth, low and sweet, rings out across an open soundscape at the start of Samaki’s new song “hartsfield.” It’s the beginning of a chillwave track built on late-night vibes and manifestations, a “tribute to a killed ego.” As a new beat fizzles to life underneath the synth, the atmosphere of “hartsfield” kicks into another gear as the lo-fi sound dips itself into the vibrant realm of hip-hop. The bass kicks in and the multilayered bliss of Samaki’s latest single becomes intoxicating. The synth waves continue to build atop the bouncy rhythm, with vibrant electric scores and dense bass sounds serving as the colorful backdrop for Samaki’s lyrics.

The beats stack across the layered verses about letting go of reality and avoiding sinking into false promises. Samaki sings, “The 5th dimension where I stay/Swear it get realer off the potion.” Later on, he’s fighting for contentment, saying if he could just let go of expectations, at any minute he could be happy.

“This song is the manifestation of my own self-acceptance. Realizing that the person I wanted to be would require letting go of my old self, this track can be seen as a tribute to those habits and beliefs that used to shape me and a triumphant announcement of the arrival of the new. All this just so happens to take place on a Kaytranada-inspired dance/house instrumental.”

This is the second single off of Jersey-born and Atlanta-raised artist Samaki’s upcoming EP, a song he says is the favorite of any he’s ever made. The title for the track comes from the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, which is where he got the idea of the song’s message. While at the airport, he thought of how the idea of building a new perspective on life could change things for the better, like if you stop being who people expect you to be, you can fully transcend into who you are. Keep up with Samaki on social media for upcoming releases, and watch the visualizer for “hartsfield” below!
