Scoobert Doobert’s new track “Think About It” is experimental funk at its finest
Elusive ambient sounds morph into the path of a distinct electronic drum kit in “Think About You,” instantly crafting a modal soundscape that entices. Scoobert Doobert’s ability to modernize experimental sound is front and center on this opening track off of his newest EP, KŌAN A, which is out now on Beformer Records. As the guitar enters, with a bold alt-rock sound, the major elements are brought to life as “Think About It” builds into its own upbeat alternative rhythm, a groovy track made in distinct musical layers.
Doobert’s voice cuts through later in the song with the aid of a supporting guitar, and the song fully transforms from its initial pull of intriguing mystery as it settles into an upbeat indie-pop-funk anthem. The initial mystery of “Think About It” is due to the song’s theme, a reflection on what is and what also isn’t, and how those concepts interact in the present time.

Scoobert Doobert has had a lot of success in the past year. His 2021 album Big Hug is nominated for best R&B, Funk or Soul Album at the San Diego Music Awards (where he is based.) He has recently been included on many of Spotify’s top playlists such as New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds Pop, and Indie Brandneu. This year he has also been featured in magazines such as Pitchfork, NME, Paste Magazine, The Fader, and others. Having only just started making music in 2018, he’s been effortlessly pushing out new creations ever since.
“My first record Finding $d (Remastered) is a collection of songs written, recorded and mixed in a day. I had the flu when I recorded Gud Gud Medicine. My second record $WAMI$ is a nostalgic wave, all recorded in a bathrobe. My third record Dragon Ball $d is a hip-hopera, covering most of the DBZ story. My fourth record Masks and Monsters was recorded in North Park during lockdown. My fifth record Little Hug is about the process coming back into the world. My upcoming record Big Hug is about trying to give my listeners a big hug.”
