Revenge Is A Dish Served Cold In Dalby’s ‘Prom’
Prom is a once in a lifetime event for all of us. It’s one of those milestone moments together with graduation that signifies that we’re finally on our way to adulthood. More than just a right of passage or a check point in the adulting journey, it’s also a test of our social skills. From asking someone we like with our promposals and later on leading to prom night itself. We get this subtle message saying “relationships and growing up come hand in hand”. Not necessarily the romantic type, well in good if you’ve found that early on. Rather the focus here are the people we surround ourselves with as we age – do they aid us in being the best we can be?
This same intricate bond between maturing and the bonds we forge are heard loud and clear in young artist Dalby Beihl aka Dalby’s latest song ‘Prom’. Produced by her good friend Dylan Rouda and released April 14th in all major streaming platforms worldwide. Dalby’s ‘Prom’ is a track that speaks of crushes, friendships and treachery. A trio that lends itself perfectly for a coming of age movie. Here we see our heroine cope up with the blow dealt to her as the guy she likes gets snagged away by the mean girl.
To say that she’s handling it fine is an understatement. In fact she’s raging about it and plans on seeking revenge (muahahahaha!). But before that, we are presented with a little back story : “I was crying in my prom dress looking up your address. Knowing that’s where he went.” as the lyrics would say. Then she goes on and explicitly proclaims her desire for payback : “Can’t wait for prom, I’m so excited! Don’t give a shit if I’m not invited. Can’t wait to make you feel the same way I did.”. Clearly she’s had enough of this pain and the only way to move on at least in her mind is to get even.
Sinister and a bit over the top, this fictional tale presented to us by Dalby reminds us that karma is present even in high school. With a voice so powerful coupled with angsty rhythm and beats. We get the sense that she intends to be the bringer of said karma. She won’t take this sitting down any longer. It’s time to stand up and fight, not just for her right but also for those who’ve suffered the same fate. “I’ll dance alone. Won’t sit in silence and flirt with all your shitty boyfriends. Can’t wait to make you feel the same way I did.”. At the end of the day the question asked is “is she a hero for doing this?” Perhaps. But no matter how you look at it, one thing rings true. Bravery comes in all ages, shapes and sizes. Yes, that includes an unlikely high schooler. So be careful what you wish for.
