After a brutal winter week here in the U.S, MELVV brings us a much needed summer vibe with his new single “Ready or Not” featuring vocals by indie pop star Terror Jr as well as additional production by umru. MELVV and Terror Jr previously collaborated back in 2019 on their track “Bones”, a sultry and wonky track showing a more left field pop approach to the two’s styles. This time around, MELVV showcases sparkly vocal chops, harmonies, and crisp percussion throughout courtesy of umru. “Ready or Not” feels like a bulletproof pop song thats full of atmosphere and driving percussion. With an almost tropical vibe to it as well, “Ready or Not” is a perfectly smooth and carefree track that shows all three artists’ different approaches and styles.
MELVV has come a long way from his early days releasing on Soundcloud to now releasing on Atlantic Records in the past couple of years. Coming up along with other producers in the new electronic pop fusion genre such as Whethan, and Louis The Child, MELVV originally became affiliated with longtime downtempo and electronica label Majestic Casual. After his breakout hit “Vibe” back in 2015, he’s seen collaborations from the likes of Two Feet, Manila Killa, and Royal & The Serpent.
Estonian-American producer umru has had his hands in just about everything the last couple of years when it comes to pop. From Charli XCX’s self titled album last year, to countless other PC Music affiliate artists, he has more than proved himself when it comes to left field pop. This collaboration with MELVV and Terror Jr sees less of his typical ultra-distorted sound and a much more balanced approach with his hands in this sugary track.
