Meechy Darko Taps Flatbush Zombie Members Zombie Juice And Erick The Architect For New Single “Sliders”

It can be refreshing to hear an artist shift tone. Meechy Darko‘s single “Sliders” marks a tonal shift on his album Gothic Luxury, and is a lighter song when compared to some of the heavier themes and production of other tracks.

Meechy Darko is one third of the Brooklyn rap group Flatbush Zombies. Hailing from the Flatbush neighborhood, the crew formed in 2010. It was their release of the video and single “Thug Waffle” in 2012 that garnered them some popularity, and the group released their debut mixtape D.R.U.G.S. in the same year. They released their most recent album Vacation in Hell in 2018. Meechy Darko has since released his first solo album, Gothic Luxury, in August 2022. It contains appearances from a number of artists, including Freddie Gibbs, Denzel Curry, and Busta Rhymes.

“Sliders” features production from Powers Pleasant, JULiA LEWiS, and Callan. The song is laden with jazzy instrumentation, with twinkling piano runs and floating synths. Compared to some of the other songs on the album which focus on darker themes and tones, this single has a lighter feel. Meechy Darko spoke about the tone of the track in a recent interview.

“[I] Wanted to release a fun song with my brothers before the year was done… Since you think all my music is scary, how’s this for a change?”

This feels like a family track. Darko references a family member in his verse, noting that if he dies he wants to do so with “pride like my papa.” Darko’s father was fatally killed in an interaction with Miami police in 2020. Darko also taps Flatbush Zombie family Zombie Juice and Erick the Architect, as well as collaborator Col3trane. With the crew back together, they trade high-octane verses that give viewers a glimpse of their infectious chemistry. Col3trane’s vocals serve as a contrast to the Zombies’ verses. His smooth delivery and silky tone are a salve for listeners’ ears. Listening to this track will have fans excited for the next project these artists have in store.
