Electropop act Ladytron Releases Haunting Single “Faces”
Some artists are experts at creating a specific atmosphere within their songs. Electropop act Ladytron does just this, creating a haunting atmosphere with their single “Faces.”
Ladytron is an electropop act hailing from Liverpool, England, named after the Roxy Music track of the same name. Their debut album, 604, was released in 2001, followed by 2002’s Light & Magic and 2005’s Witching Hour.

“Faces” is the third single from their forthcoming seventh studio album Time’s Arrow after the release of previous singles “City of Angels” and “Misery Remember Me.” It comes on the heels of the announcement of Ladytron’s west coast US tour in spring 2023 in support of Time’s Arrow. They have shows in Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco.

“Faces” has a haunting quality to it. The synth-heavy production is reminiscent of the best of 70’s and 80’s synthpop. It throws the listener into Ladytron’s spooky disco dancehall with glassy synths and marching percussion.
Ladytron sing about the sea of faces that they encounter, some with “an alibi,” others with “a promise.” The lyrics are mysterious, tangible enough to get a vague understanding, but ethereal enough so that they’re hard to hold onto. If the verses are about being lost in this sea of faces, there is something hopeful about the lyrics of the chorus.
Sometimes when the lights go out we’re free
Sometimes when we’re dreaming, you and me
Sometimes we can almost see our faces
Sometimes we can almost show our faces
In this, Ladytron is hoping to unveil their truest selves. Maybe it is only on this dark dancefloor that they’ve created in this musical soundscape that they feel free enough to truly express themselves.
