On September 7th, Maxo Kream returned with a new single ahead of his appearance at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. The new single, “Big Persona,” features production and verses from Tyler, the Creator, who is having a tremendous 2021 himself with the release of his new album, Call Me If You Get Lost, back in June. In addition to “Big Persona” and his Pitchfork appearance, Maxo Kream announced that his new album, Weight Of The World, will be released in October.

“Big Persona” marks a new era for Maxo Kream. While the title seems to be pure braggadocio, it is also a reference to Maxo’s streetwear brand as well as a way to honor his late brother. The track itself sounds like a true “Dirty South” trap anthem. MIDI horns are all over the beat, and Tyler, the Creator has cemented himself as a top tier producer, working for not only himself, but also Maxo, Westside Gunn, and Solange. “Big Persona” is one of those songs that sounds like its producer, but it works so well for the artist it was produced for that it’s hard to tell where the line is. Maxo’s verse is short, yes, but he says everything he needs to in his 24 bars. He details where his life has been and where it is now, and he gives a sense of hopefulness to the bragging.

Weight Of The World will reportedly “detail the ups and downs without [Maxo’s] brother on the path to his next step [sic].” It also marks the first album Maxo Kream has released since 2019’s critically-acclaimed Brandon Banks. Time will tell how Weight Of The World is received, but if “Big Persona” is any indication, Maxo is back on the right path.
