LP Giobbi Opens Eyes to “Light Places”
LP Giobbi seems to do it all. Light Places, the DJ-pianist’s debut album, is no exception. Giobbi’s record puts out a kaleidoscope of sound and energy that instantly captivates. She is well known for her production expertise, and is set to take Light Places on tour this month. LP Giobbi’s artistry is top notch, and she brings it to every table with this release. She dropped a studio performance video to “Feels Just Like It,” with Caroline Byrne, but also released exploratory visuals on youtube for the rest of the album. Iconic collaborations on the record further solidify the mark it will make on the world of thoughtful house music.
“Intro: Mother” immediately lets the listener into LP Giobbi’s sweet, succulent piano skills. The whispering vocals, “good morning” set a tone of ease to the beginning of Light Places. Natural sounds float in the back, grounding the listener in the experience. Next, “If Love Is A Skill” with Sofi Tukker turns the tempo up a bit. The cyclical nature of this song is alluring, commanding the space with fierce keys and wavy synth.
“Can’t Let You Go,” featuring Little Jet, brings the drum kit to the forefront. Entertwined with clever vocals, it’s impossible not to dance to this track. It plays with some electronic sound, which is perfect for the warmer months. “Can’t Let You Go” is the type of song that basks in moments of summer freedom.
“All I Need (Interlude),” which begins as a voicemail, shifts into a new path for the tracks ahead. A deep crescendo brings the listener to what seems to be a beat drop, but falls into a piano melody in the end. It trickles perfectly into “All I Need,” which takes those solemn keys and revs them back up a bit. This emotional moment on the album sheds light on LP Giobbi’s impeccable ability to balance fast moving beats that still come from a deep, rich well of emotions.

Caroline Byrne’s first collaboration on the album, “Another Life” is suspenseful without taking itself too seriously. “It’s like I met you in another life,” Byrne sings with syrupy vocals that lift the song to an ethereal place. “Georgia” begins with a beat that is quite self-assured. The lack of vocals allow the energy to come through from the song’s pulse. A spotlight on LP Giobbi’s house mixing abilities, “Georgia” goes on a holistic, exciting trajectory via the power of the synth, drums, and sporadic vocals.
“Follow the Loop,” featuring Le Chev, brings a funky, fresh element to the album. It stays true to its title, circling around a playful tune. Laser-like sound effects give the song a shimmer, and the bongo melody at the end ties in a perfect sense of joy. “Feels Just Like It,” with Caroline Byrne, has a similar, upbeat nature. Byrne’s vocals get another moment to sparkle, continuing to stand-out on the album.

“Body Breathe,” with Monogem, is a refreshing moment on the album. With an smoothe intro, it opens up a world of accepting ease and advocating for inner peace. “I do it for the energy,” the song pumps, full of dazzling riffs and a cloud-like, puffy pulse. “All In A Dream” featuring DJ Tennis Joseph Ashworth has a similar spacey flare to it. The piano, as it has the entire album, holds its own in this tune, with a long, gradual buildup that truly pays off. Each song on the album has a very swift bridge that waxes and wanes with the rest of the song perfectly, and that attention to detail is especially present in this track. LP Giobbi’s music simply communicates that she knows what she’s doing.

“All My Life,” the album’s penultimate song, featuring Sofi Tukker, is gentle but pronounced. There is an easygoing nature to this song, seeming to come from a place that is very self-assured. The synth spotlight in this song brings something bubblier to the chorus. The middle of the song is equipped with a unique moment of vocals, led by a little riff, repeating and flipping through octaves on top of the keys, slowly picking up time and volume. As more elements rebuild into the song, a sense of wholeness comes through in its finale. Finally, “Outro: Not Fade Away” allows the acoustic guitar to say its piece. Though collective vocals and the synth come in and take charge, the contrasting intro balances this final track well. It unites the tonal themes heard throughout the album, drawing it to a classy close.
