Keanu Reefs Reveals the Impact of Being Left “On Read”

Two-man band and low-key jokesters Keanu Reefs have an all-too-relatable track for you if you’re worried about heading into this cuffing season without a boo because you keep getting left on read. Seriously, their newest single is called “On Read” and is a heartfelt message about how impactful a simple text can be, especially from those who are important to you. And while I don’t really get “read” receipts because I live the Android life, I can still appreciate the vulnerability and reliability of the track’s message that feels just a step behind ghosting.

Consisting of Julian Nisenboim (guitar and production) and Noah Cohen (vocals and marketing), this set of relative newcomers fuses funk, rock, pop, and other musical inspirations to create stunning pieces of work that are not only melodic but also have deep-rooted lyrics and meanings. After releasing their first album in 2019, the pair has since released two EPs as well as a handful of singles. Their goal is to create tracks that people not only like, but will love and want to listen to on repeat.

“On Read” features a catchy indie rock/funk vibe that invites listeners into the familiar journey through the lyrics. Using bright guitar strums as the instrumental backbone, Noah croons to a missed love interest as he reminisces about their earlier days – when he first became entranced and the small things that he would notice about them. Then he reveals how the unraveling of messaging has affected him, as he longs for a reply as he stays in bed. Even though the track’s message is one filled with reminiscent pining, the overall mood is kept light enough, something that the duo excels at with their approach to writing and production, so listeners aren’t bogged down by the flashbacks they may get from how relatable the lyrics are.
