Jessie Reyez Makes Her Directorial Debut with a Music Video for Her New Single “FRAUD”
The object of Reyez’s affection in the Colombian/Canadian singer’s latest single “FRAUD” may in fact be a “f*#@$%g fraud,” but Reyez herself is anything but, delivering honest insight into unrequited love.
“FRAUD” opens with playback of a voice saying, “That boy’s a manipulator, bro!” Right from the jump, audiences know that they’re about to listen to Reyez go off on someone who has done her wrong. As the song continues, Reyez addresses some of the issues that caused her heart to be broken; one of the most important being loyalty.
Real loyal (loyal)
What the fuck you know about loyalty
Or promises or calling back or ownership or honesty?
Real loyal (loyal)
You know all about planting seeds with bitches
There was tension with DMing once I fell asleep
Real loyal (loyal)
Oh, you’re such a fucking fraud
Your lies, they go on and on and on
“FRAUD” by Jessie Reyez

Directed by Emma Higgins and introducing Jessie Reyez’s directorial debut, the music video for “FRAUD” tells the story of unrequited love. Being controlled by a force, materialized by an anonymous individual bringing her to the person that doesn’t love her back, Jessie shows herself in a vulnerable position as she aims to free herself from the cycle brought by unreciprocated feelings.
The video is visually stunning with its emphasis on heavily saturated red accents and ornate gold jewelry. As Reyez continues to sing about the scars that her relationship caused, and the coming to terms with being in love with someone who can’t love her back, the scenery changes from showing Reyez being trapped in a room to watching her escape and find her freedom.
In the closing scene of the video, we see Reyez burning the portrait of her captor assisting her in her much needed cathartic release. As the audience watches–transfixed by the beauty and power of the flames–audio of Reyez plays in the background signaling that it’s time to move on.
Yeah, but I know I’m not perfect
I know I didn’t make the relationship as healthy as I could have but like
I talk to my therapist, my therapist was like “This gotta be a rap”
