Today, Jen Janet introduced her first single of 2021, with more new work to come in the future. Written in the very beginning of the shelter-in-place orders last year, “Shadows” shares the emotions of the isolation and sudden new normal we have had to face throughout the pandemic so far. As we are all learning to live through such strange times, its impact will remain as an imprint shaping us further in our lives.
About the track, Jen states, “I started having strange dreams about childhood friends, and it would happen every night. I just suddenly started dreaming about people I hadn’t spoken to in years. I was wondering where they were, and if they were ok. I’d wake up feeling lost. I’m not sure why. I definitely felt some loneliness and uncertainty during the shelter-in-place quarantine, and I think a lot of others did too. I wrote the lyrics to Shadows in one day, and after that, most of the dreams finally stopped. Some of my family members became infected, and it is definitely an uncertain time. I think we are all learning to live with the impact of this virus, and I think it affected a lot of people’s emotional and mental health.”
Beginning the song with a unique fusing of instrumentals, heavy guitar, electronic, Jen’s vocals haunt the mind as they lure its listener sweetly into their chthonic doom while soothing the soul. People who keep to themselves normally, before last March, when everything changed; had its own luxuries in the sense that connections with others can be made and broken much differently. And now that things are different, there’s a guilt in cutting ties with people in the past, especially after a pandemic hits and creates a new form of forced isolation and fear. Reconnecting with someone now is harder than it used to be. “Shadows” creates a time capsule of these feelings beautifully in a short few minutes while leaving its audience longing for something other than loneliness and the complexities of simply meeting with someone safely.
