A large crowd gathered in St. Louis‘ Effen Tent, located conveniently along the path of the Mardi Gras parade earlier in the day. It was a smooth transition from there to the tent where the performances began on Saturday, February 10th.
Nathan Scott B2B Vinny Vibe did a wonderful job of setting the dance pace early on in the day. As people are filing in from a very stimulating parade, they needed something that would keep those feelings going. Nathan Scoot and Vinny Vibe did just that with a solid mix of tech house remixes and dance floor openers.
Filmore did his thing, unique to the rest of the day with a country act. Seeing his name on the lineup was a bit of a shock, as I know he can perform, but I was interested to see how he handled being the act in between dance music DJs. I am happy to say that Filmore was THE act to choose to handle this as he managed perfectly. The interactions he had with the crowd in between his runs of songs kept the energy flowing. During the back half of his set he slowed things down just enough for the crowd to have a moment to collect their energy, and then brought things right back up by closing out the set with his track “USA” which he lead in with an incredibly loud “USA” chant backed by the fans.
From the moment Mattia (MEDUZA) stepped on stage the entire room was filled with energy. The seamless blending from one song to another kept the crowd in sync for the entire MEDUZA performance. One of the most special moments from this set is when the crowd sang the entire first chorus of “Paradise” on their own to help MEDUZA lead the track in. It should also be noted at this point every area of the venue began to pack in even further. However, the staff (security, bottle service team, etc.) did a great job at ensuring things kept moving in an orderly and safe fashion. By the end of the set Mattia had teased “Musica” throughout the entire set, and when he finally brought it in as the penultimate closing track the crowd erupted and was ready for round two, the perfect set up for his buddy James Hype. This was absolutely a set to remember.
James Hype is truly an artist every should see for themselves in person if possible. There are few performing acts who can manage the level of technical skill along with the crowd control that James Hype brings. Being brought in on such a high note from MEDUZA meant that he would need to keep those energy levels high. Tracks like “Disconnected”, “One by One”, and “Ferarri” were utilizted perfectly in the front end to make sure that the dance floor remained open and utilized. The middle section of this set is where James really made this one a legendary experience. By creating moments with crowd chanting, sing alongs, and big drops with confetti explosions, this set was proven to be the perfect choice for a headlining slot.
I also wanted to give Vinny Vibe one more shout out here. He did a wonderful job managing the crowd rush to leave by keeping more than 3/4 of the dance floor intact by coming right on stage once James Hype was finished and hitting the room with everything he had left. By traversing genres such as tech house, techno, and psytrance, he made sure those who wanted to keep the party had the best setting to do so and for those who wanted to leave (not that many) could ensure themselves a safe and non rushed exit out of the venue.
Stay tuned for more updates on events happening in St. Louis! We look forward to hearing what Meduza, James Hype, and the other performers have to offer next.
