It’s a Party at the DMV in Scoobert Doobert’s Latest Single

If you ask anyone where the party’s at, they probably won’t say the DMV. But if you ask Scoobert Doobert, he will. The reason for his answer lies in his new single, “Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV),” from his latest album, MÖB.

“Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)” is a quirky tune that celebrates the DMV. Though visiting the DMV may seem like a mundane errand, Scoobert Doobert’s storytelling shows us it is much more than that.

In his song, we are transported to the waiting area of the DMV where we are surrounded by a hodgepodge of colorful characters including the richest man alive, a smelly child, the oldest man around and a woman with a newborn. Scoobert Doobert describes these people as the colors of his city, a metaphor that speaks to the unique backgrounds and characteristics of each person.

But the colors of my city
Be everywhere around me
Can’t look away

Despite being strangers from different walks of life, all of these people are united by the shared experience of visiting the DMV. They may not have anything in common, but there exists a sense of connection and community from being at the same place at the same time.

As they wait for their appointments, each character does their own thing. One pukes in the doorway while another dances in the corner. With all the chaos going on, Scoobert Doobert likens the atmosphere of the DMV to that of a party. This perspective illustrates how an ordinary visit to the DMV can actually turn out to be a fun and entertaining experience.

The party extends beyond the lyrics and into the music, which has a big mood-boosting vibe. Booming drums keep a steady beat you can’t help but tap your foot to while funky guitar rhythms and soft, yet energetic vocals create a fun groove that’ll surely lift your mood. Before the track concludes, the automated voice of a DMV employee makes a playful announcement that drives the message of the song home: “Attention all DMV patrons / It is now time to party.”
