“Wishful Thinking” was born out of fire. Literally.
Since Honey I’m Home’s rehearsal space burnt down—with its amps, guitar, and effects— the band has been convinced it’s “cursed.” Yet this shoegaze single is anything but.
Straightforward lyricism hits you in the face with raw emotion and relatability, dominated by “Wishful thinking, over dreaming.” The song is about words left unsaid and moments hanging in the air. Sonically rich and shimmery, fuzzy guitars and reverb make for a floating and hypnotic quality.
“Wishful Thinking” explores the longing to reconnect with people no longer in your life, whether it’s a lost love or a departed family member. We tried to capture the intensity of that unfulfilled desire with a layered, dreamlike soundscape.
~ Thom Schotanus (vocals, guitar)
“Wishful Thinking” is accompanied by a visual aesthetic the band describes as “VHS horror.” It’s unnervingly nostalgic, eerie and comforting at the same time.
Released yesterday, “Wishful Thinking” marks the band’s debut single. Honey I’m Home is off to a solid start, having opened for Goat Girl, and The Buoys, and Hotline TNT, as well as performing at a Girl in Red’s show at AFAS live.
Five band members come together from across The Netherlands, from Marathon, Jagd, and Banji for a vibe they label themselves as “Amsterdam zoomergaze.” The band is hard-hitting and independent, self-recording and self-producing. This single was mixed by Sonny Diperri (Julie, DIIV, Protomartyr).
Honey I’m Home is on the rise. Keep an eye on this new band for all things shoegaze and dark fantasy. Stay connected on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and more, and stream “Wishful Thinking” on Spotify.
