“BRAINROT,” one of the latest singles from alternative rock singer, grandson, sends a message of resistance from technology, power, and violence. The song, which came out on May 30, was the first to be released from his upcoming album, INERTIA, that comes out on September 5.
Continuing rock music’s long history of activism, “BRAINROT” calls out the “cognitive dissonance” that comes with society’s constant use of technology. Being exposed to endless news posts have left many desensitized from the chaos around them.
In a post shared to Instagram on May 22, grandson wrote of the single,
2025 has brought a hyper acceleration of wealth and power concentration in the hands of the few, with the same tactics of distraction and manipulation keeping us focused on cultural and social division and misinformation to avoid accountability for their crimes against humanity. ‘BRAINROT’ is a song about how our overreliance on technology and social media is weaponized to stifle dissent and crush resistance.
And grandson accomplishes this fully in the powerful single. With lyrics, deeply embedded in passion, and voice that mirrors a battle cry, grandson uses his jarring but electrifying sound to make listeners focus. It places the social issues troubling our world right at the forefront with no room to turn away.
The music video which was directed by Joe Weil, who’s collaborated with artists including 21 Savage and Kendrick Lamar creates the perfect visual to the songs meaning.
Beginning with a kid glued to his phone, watching videos of a girl in a technicolored room “yassifying” weapons and posing as a distraction, viewers watch “BRAINROT” happening in real time. Opposite of this are dark, intense flashes of real-life clips of destruction, protest, and war along with the grandson singing right into the camera.
Combining his dedication for art and activism, grandson successfully uses “BRAINROT” as a call to action, awakening listeners to our true reality.
