Find A New Muse in Fox Gunn’s Debut Track “Pottery”
Fans of pop music from artists such as Halsey and Fletcher will love Fox Gunn’s debut single “Pottery.” The single is more aligned with a dark, alt-pop soundscape as Fox Gunn details her pain after her ex-girlfriend, her “muse,” ended their relationship. With a heavy beat, introspective lyrics, and a catchy melody, “Pottery” is all about complicated feelings after a breakup, or as she states,
“It’s not just a breakup song: it’s about my first love, my first heartbreak and how I didn’t know how to deal with all those feelings at the time – so I turned those feelings into a song (or like Henry Miller said, literature…).”
Fox Gunn further explains the inspiration behind “Pottery,”
“I started writing POTTERY a month after getting my heart broken by the person I had been writing about for years, my muse – but also someone who always made me feel like I was too emotional, too vulnerable like I felt too many things; so I had made myself weak and small. It was only after the breakup that I realized being vulnerable in a world where it is seen as a weakness is badass.”
Lyrically, Fox Gunn mixes spoken word into the song to capture the feeling of a messy, internal monologue, especially while coming to terms with losing your first love. Throughout the song, the artist laments about how “I heard you’ve traded me for drugs and alcohol/ I hope they make you happy, hope this is not your downfall/ I know you best, I climbed up all your walls/ But I am tired of this cycle.” Although it is a darker song about handling pain, there is still a hopeful note as she sings, “I think it’s time we call it truce/ My former muse/ Now it’s all about me, no more writing about you.”
