On October 28th, Moroccan-Canadian singer Faouzia released her new single, “Puppet.” The first single from Faouzia since June’s “Hero,” “Puppet” takes the same topic from a different lens. While “Hero” was about asking if a potential friend or lover would be supportive through all times, “Puppet” is about cutting off someone who doesn’t want to see the singer be themselves. On the whole, it’s a very good song.
The production is phenomenal, Faouzia’s voice is incredible as always, and the chorus is quite catchy. While the stuttering of the word “puppet” doesn’t quite work, the rest of the chorus is fantastic. The melody combining with the strings works very well in this song, and the repetition of حرية, the Arabic word for “freedom,” is just another layer of the song that does exactly what it’s supposed to do in phenomenal fashion.
On the song, Faouzia has said: “‘Puppet’ is a song about challenging relationship dynamics as a woman, taking charge, and shamelessly being yourself. I want young girls around the world to know that they don’t need to change who they are for anyone, and that someone that loves you shouldn’t ask you to be someone you’re not. If anyone tries to knock you down, or force you to conform, use that as motivation to stand up taller and only surround yourself with those that want to prop you up and support you. Throughout the song, the word “ حرية” is chanted, Arabic for ‘freedom.’ As the world continues down a difficult path daily, this message is more necessary than ever.”
