Exclusive Premiere: Rupe’s “growing up is strange” is a poignant look back
Tackling the melancholy of leaving something in the past, wondering where people have been and where you’re going yourself, the innate nostalgia within Rupe’s latest single isn’t a happy accident. The Lousiana-based singer wrote “growing up strange” at the end of his college experience, a time full of feelings of bittersweetness and nostalgia. “I was very sad that the past is the past but grateful that I was able to experience it.” With this latest song, he encourages listeners to use it as a way to look back thankfully at their own lives.
With understated acoustic elements framed with smooth production, patient drums, and a hint of electronic additions, the song is the perfect mix of natural and modern, a sound Rupe was after from the beginning. “I wrote this song with an idea of acoustic and more raw production with a mix of synth elements and emphasis on raw, soothing vocals.” One of the most captivating lines Rupe sings in the piece is “this life just moves too fast.” It’s that universal feeling that many can relate to and it keeps the song feeling so personal and raw.
Rupe is a 23-year-old songwriter that hails from a rural part of Louisiana. He began his musical journey younger than most. “I picked up my first guitar at the age of 8. It was a Washburn Sunburst Stratocaster with a small practice amp that most likely rivaled the age of my parents.” Throughout his youth, he spent his time learning as much as he could about guitar, and eventually joined a few different bands as he got older. As the years wore on and he got more comfortable, writing his own music followed, and in college, he learned production too.
