Don’t Hold Back With Malin Pettersen’s ‘Cry If I Want To (Feat. Bergljot Bjella)’
Emotions as complicated as they come make up who are for the most part. They’re the spark and at the same time the spice that makes the world we live in even more fascinating than it already is. Whether these all leads to a trail of glory or bursting into flames, it’s directly up to us. Well it largely depends on how we react and how we project those emotions. Not to mention our chosen medium where we shall unleash these. Will it be in the confine of our rooms alone, in the company friends somewhere else, or online for all the world to see? You be the judge. Just remember that each one has repercussions attached to it.
This same complicated web albeit in a more intimate way can be experienced in Norwegian artist Malin Pettersen with her latest single entitled ‘Cry If I Want To’ (Feat. Bergljot Bjella). Released June 14th in all major streaming services worldwide. ‘Cry If I Want To’ is a song that delves into the intricacies of sorrow and brokenness. Most especially the aspect of crying and the perceptions attached to it such as a sign of being weak and vulnerable. The uphill struggle that comes with society mocking us for doing so as it intertwines with the pain of the moment. Thus creating this atmosphere of darkened skies filled with gloom, doom and isolation.
A beautiful flower in full bloom through the warm vocals from Malin Pettersen herself and Bergljot Bjella. Laced in with old school sensibilities and instrumentals pleasantly divine good enough to make you bawl. One can still find solace beyond the melancholy and agony in ‘Cry If I Want To (Feat Bergljot Bjella)’. Whilst it has the makings of a certified tear jerker. The tune ever so powerfully manages to push back against the criticism about engaging in crying. “Not all heroes wear capes” as this current generation would fondly say.
Filled to the brim with relatable and thought provoking lyrics such as “They say that you gotta try to be strong, I know / But how can you hold on when it won’t let you go…”. ‘Cry If I Want To (Feat Bergljot Bjella)’ challenges us to accept crying for what it is, stating that it’s a normal thing that occurs even to the best of us. Moreover begging to differ that we see it as an act of bravery; a way of breaking away from the memories left behind by a person/ event that brought us intense hurt. Sure it may not be the cure, but it could very well act as the bridge to recovery and ultimately a pathway to a brighter tomorrow. That in itself is something to cry about- with tears of joy.
