DOLLY PARTON & KELLY CLARKSON REIMAGE ICONIC SONG “9 TO 5” FOR NEW DOCUMENTARY
Everyone’s fav unofficial glam aunty Dolly Parton and the mother of modern country pop Kelly Clarkson have been working tirelessly “9 to 5” to bless us with a completely new version of the eternal classic. This once-in-a-lifetime epic duet has been given to us thanks to the highly anticipated “Still Working 9 to 5 “ documentary that just dropped on September 16. I highly recommend that you run and check out this docu ASAP (especially if you’re a Gen Z baby like me) because it has blew my mind and broadened my horizon. For example, did you know that the original “9 to 5” song was actually written for a movie with the same name almost 40 years ago and features a hot young Jane Fonda in her battle for emancipation and respect in the workplace??? Listen up I think we’ve been kept from this essential part of feminism cinematography for too long and it is time that we give it the hype now that it deserves!
The original “9 to 5” was already an absolute banger (and still is) that earned Dolly GRAMMY awards for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance (duh) and became the emancipation anthem of the century. Now the country icon has been brought together with female powerhouse Kelly Clarkson by the film’s executive producers Shane McAnally, Sasha Sloan & King Henry to reimagine the classic song into a melancholic yet inspirational remake that is supposed to hit the note of our current time. Of course, Kelly was absolutely fangirling about this opportunity to work with her idol (tbh who wouldn’t?)
“I am so honored that Dolly asked me to reimagine this iconic song, ‘9 to 5,’ with her! She is so talented, an inspiration to all women, and one of the sweetest people you will ever meet! I hope y’all like what we did, but even if you don’t, remember I got to sing a duet with the magical Dolly Parton and now have bragging rights til the end of time!”
Kelly Clarkson
Although the song has a very different melody from the original and clearly bears strong influence from Clarkson’s personal style, the two ladies harmonize perfectly together and create something truly stunning. The new vibe contrasts the cheery tone of its predecessor and really captures the grief that we should be feeling considering that women still have to struggle with equal rights after almost half a decade. In a way, the new version almost carries the weight of a dirge shrouded in a modern country pop melody.
We’re at the dawn of a new wave of feminism that has been started by the #metoo movement and is growing in strength through the fight for female reproductive rights throughout the country. The feature documentary Still Working 9 to 5 comes exactly at the right time to remind us of the vital impact the OG movie had on the women’s movement of the time and continues to have today as the fight for workplace equality persists. The movie actually inspired several spin-off series and Broadway musicals. It also features activists and individuals closely associated with the women’s movement both now and then.
Get ready ladies because this calls for a pajama party with a Dolly Parton karaoke session and a “9 to 5” movie marathon. Who’s joining me? Tell us who your feminine rights movement hero is in the comments below and let’s rejoice to work on a better future together!
