dodie Releases Her First Single Of 2022 Titled “Got Weird”

Around the end of July this year, dodie released, “Got Weird,” which is her first single since her debut album, Build A Problem (2021), and her Christmas song collaboration with Laufey. Its funky beat, underlying bass guitar, and dodie’s soft vocals portray her feelings of confusion. “Got Weird” is about a weird feeling dodie had after a date, and the dawning realization of her inner conflict when it comes to dating as a bisexual woman. dodie has been open about her sexuality for years, whether it was through her YouTube channel or songs such as “She” and “In The Middle.” Her intimate and open lyrics provide the listener a space to understand what dodie is going through, and also an opportunity for them to think about these emotions as well.

As dodie further explains,

“‘Got Weird’ was written after a strange date. The whole song can probably be described as; I get the ick with myself whenever I date girls. It might be internalized biphobia, it might be from lack of representation growing up (“no one told me, course I stumbled”) – but regardless, ‘Got Weird’ is about a kiss with a girl on a date following a faux confident arrangement (“I played the man, and you bought it”), and how clearly, following that, I really have got some “s*** to figure out”,”

Listen to “Got Weird” below:

As the song progresses, the music composition changes so that it sounds more slurred and almost far away like when one is drunk. The lyrics in this part of the song seem as though dodie is reflecting, and confessing at the same time, “No one told me/ ‘Course I stumbled/ Where’s the reference?/ That’s the old me/ God forgive her/ Hyped it up/ Through a dream/ Held your hand/ Suppressed a scream/ Oh baby, please believe me/ Let’s not make it deeper than it needs to be.”

Along with the drop of “Got Weird,” dodie released a lyric video, which you can watch below:

The lyric video creates an awkwardly intimate atmosphere, as the viewer watches dodie make out with a sheet of glass for the entirety of the song, which is fitting for a song titled, “Got Weird.”

“Got Weird” is an exploration of dodie’s feelings in terms of her bisexuality, and the song’s funky musical composition, harmonies, and use of interesting sound effects create an almost mysterious and dark undertone to the song. Fans of dodie and her music can stay up to date on new releases, tour dates, and other news by following her on TwitterInstagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
