Dive into the ‘VOID’ with Melanie Martinez
Since 2015’s Cry Baby, Melanie Martinez has always had a unique and immersive vision for her work. Known for her “baby” aesthetic, Martinez’s work became synonymous with pastels and dolls. She rose to fame with Cry Baby and perfected the vision with K-12.
Now, with her third studio album, PORTALS, Martinez is venturing into a new aesthetic. She is all about nature and fairies. She has immersed herself in this magical world, donning prosthetics at all times.
On Tuesday, Martinez released her newest music video for the era. In the video, she takes on the fan-favorite song “VOID.”
The song was the second single from PORTALS and since its release in March, fans have been desperate for a video.
In the self-directed video, Martinez is once again in her elaborate fairy attire. The video is dark and terrifying as she tries to “escape the void.” It is not for the weak of heart as the dark aesthetic features bugs, storms and creepily large eyeballs.
“VOID” shows Martinez’s vision is as strong as ever and cements her as an icon of visuals in the music industry.
Martinez is no stranger to the director role. For her 2019 album, K-12, she directed an accompanying full-length film. The movie follows a fantastical boarding school with a horrific twist. The masterpiece is well worth a watch.
PORTALS was another smash hit from Martinez. It is her third album to reach the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart. Debuting at #2, she still has a grip over the world.
Martinez recently began the North American leg of the Portals Tour. She recently announced the addition of European and Australian dates. See the full list of shows here.
