Devan’s New Single, “Lie,” is an Emotional Rollercoaster Complete with Blissful Melodies

Indie-pop singer/songwriter Devan is back with her first post-EP release. She revealed a sweetly intimate and delicately emotive debut solo EP, Pink Noise, earlier this year in February. It was an honest introduction of who she is as an artist and producer while also being a commitment to remaining honest as she reflected on the uncertainty that comes with navigating your 20s.

She continues down her ultra-relatable path of indie-pop sensibilities with a twist of electronic elements with her new single, “Lie.” It’s an emotional roller coaster with mellow verses and contrasting dramatic choruses. It’s about the blissful ignorance when you know a relationship is going sour, but you don’t want to face it yet. So you rely on denial to buy yourself more time, even though you know you’re just postponing the inevitable.

Soothing yet fast-paced piano chords and faint echoing vocalizations back the strong main vocals from Devan. Her subtle vibratos ring against the blissful melodies that parallel the willful ignorance portrayed in the lyrics. Gliding guitar chords and rebounding synths are introduced to continue to build the elegant soundscape, which tumbles with the vocal variations between verses and the chorus. While the overall sound is upbeat and sweet, the lyrics reveal the true emotions behind the serenity. Behind the catchy chorus is a sad willingness to hold onto a lie than to face the undeniable truth. If all lies could sound this pretty, then we’d be living in a very different world.
