“What You Wanted” is a hard rock single full of catchy guitar riffs, heavy percussion, and vocals that range from soaring highs to gruff aggressive lows. Dearest Helpless further describes the meaning behind the track,
“‘What You Wanted’ pulls on the idea of allowing an individual to make a choice and living with the consequences in the hopes that they see a better way. Sometimes the best way to learn is to fall.”
The lyrics further emphasize this message, with the song opening with the lines, “Every piece I gave to build you up/ Laying the foundation with my trust,” reflecting the mistaken belief that something good was being built up. However, this belief is broken as, “Wasted potential falling to earth/ When you hit the ground/ I will not rejoice/ I’ll remember what you did/ You had a choice.” The anger and pain in the lyrics are further reflected in the vocal performance of lead singer Henk Plaggemars, especially towards the end of the song as he repeats the lyrics, “This is what you wanted/So you go it.”
“What You Wanted is a song portraying the pain and frustration of someone who wants to help a person they care about, but the person can’t help themselves in building this life for themselves.
Hailing from South Australia, Dearest Helpless is a four-piece alternative rock band comprised of Bryan Schiller, Cameron Kirk, Matt Stevens, and Henk Plaggemars. Initially, the band was only Schiller, Kirk, and Stevens, but the band hit a period of stagnation resulting in six almost (but not quite) finished songs. Plaggemars was recommended to join the group by Jack Hartley of Interim Studios, where the lead singer’s fresh perspective added the finishing touch to the songs.
