On November 8th, 2021, Canadian singer-songwriter Danielle Dayton released her single, “I Can’t Lose You.” The way I came to this song is a little interesting, but I won’t put that here. I would instead like to focus on the gorgeous instrumental and vocal performances within this recording.
Let’s start with the instrumentals. The song centers around a piano, but there’s also an acoustic guitar, sweeping strings, and occasional synthesizer swells to set the tone of what is an incredibly melancholic song. The lyrics tell the story of a failing relationship and the pain the person trying to keep things working feels when it seems like everything is crashing around them. It’s honestly incredibly moving imagery, and those lyrics are aided immensely by:
Danielle Dayton’s vocals. The vocal performance on this track is equal parts soulful, airy, and inviting. The pain in her voice is immense, and that raw emotion in the vocal performance allows everything that she is good at to come through. There is not a moment on this track where I’m not enthralled by Dayton’s vocals. Every individual aspect of this track comes together in perfect synergy, and it reminds me that pain does sometimes lead to the best pieces of art.
That might seem a bit dour, but I mean it in the best way possible. Check out “I Can’t Lose You” below, and let us know what you think!
