Dana Dentata’s “pantychrist” Becomes Powerful Weapon for Rebirth from Trauma

Canadian-born musician and model, Dana Dentata shares “pantychrist,” a single which serves as the title track for her upcoming debut album, to be released later this year. The single was produced by Dylan Brady of 100 gecs and was joined by an official music video conceived by Dentata herself, and directed by Kathleen Dycaico (Boy Harsher, Boy Harsher x Rabit, QUALIATIK, Leya).

On “pantychrist,” Brady’s signature maximalism production lays a menacing foundation for Dana Dentata as she ushers in a new era of self-empowerment and continues her artistic journey into the light. It follows her recent single, “Do U Like Me Now,” as a reaction to the unrealistic expectations placed on women by men, and being a woman in a patriarchal society. Dentata uses her experiences of trauma and creates a powerful weapon out of it in her music.

Healing a lifetime of trauma can feel uncomfortable, vulnerable and painful, similar to a pregnancy. Your former self may die in the process but what comes next is a new creation of life that is beautiful and pure. In many ways the abuse I’ve endured around my womb has held me down and kept me in purgatory. Ripping out the nail from my womb means setting myself free, bringing my new self back to life to experience happiness, purity and bliss. The ‘pantychrist’ state of mind I have been manifesting is finally coming to fruition.

“pantychrist” curates a statement of healing; whereas it’s often depicted as a peaceful process, Dentata shares its raw, bloody, and gut-wrenching experiences. The process itself can in fact be more painful than just leaving things be, but in the growing, the labor, comes forth a bloom of peace and relief as the result. Healing is a long journey, and Dentata uses her latest single to depict a state of pregnancy, struggle, and rebirth throughout the music video, its vivid visuals captivate the audience with its bold statement and artistic imagery. Dana Dentata has gained distinction for being equal parts empowering and provocative. By pairing her unapologetically sexual lyrics with genre blurring production, Dentata creates liberating and aggressive femme-centric hip-hop.
