Count the Leaves addresses the “Elephant” in the room

“Elephant” is just as whimsical as the single artwork, song title and band name would have you anticipating. The song is of a similar light-hearted and magical energy to Of Monsters And Men with a more straightened sound. It’s got lovely folk melodies and sweet lyrics, though it sways more rock than folk.

From the first listen you might think it’s about the ups and downs of a friendship between two humans. Upon deeper inspection it’s actually an ode to the singer’s relationship with chronic pain, the “elephant” in the room for her. With playfulness and irony, “Elephant” explores the possible lessons that pain can teach us.

Count the Leaves is the creative project of Hong Kong based singer songwriter Eunice Yueng. She has shared “Elephant” as one part of five featured in her EP entitled This World Can Hold. Each song is meant to tell a beautifully complex story that invites her listeners to lean into the paradoxical and painful parts of the human experience. The common thread between each story? Simply holding space for it to be told and absorbed.
