Candace In Wonderland Fights With Her Ego In “K.I.S.S.”
The saying “Keep It Simple Stupid” takes on a whole new meaning in Candace in Wonderland’s new single, “K.I.S.S..” This pop punk single explores Candace’s inner battle of finding inner peace when battling with her own ego and insecurities, which is exemplified in lyrics such as, “Distorted body image/ Choking on my privilege/ Fightin’ with my ego.”
Part of the inspiration for “K.I.S.S.” stems from the Candace in Wonderland brand of changing her hair whenever she had a new project that was about to be released. As Candace states,
“The concept was that I’m fighting against past versions of myself, drawing from the lyric ‘fighting with my ego’…Building a brand based on my hair has been really fun for me, but I think I started feeling boxed in by it as well. I started feeling like that’s all that I was, and I needed to challenge that notion. ”
This sentiment is perfectly encapsulated later in the song, when Candace speaks about these struggles, saying, “I’m sick of taking myself so seriously… I need to take myself more seriously…”
The song is catchy with its heavy pop beat, and Candace’s signature, airy voice. She plays around with the production by adding effects to her background vocals, as well as during the spoken part of the song. As Candace puts it,
“ K.I.S.S. explores the idea of fighting your own ego with nostalgic pop punk styles, intimate and honest lyrics and in-your-face pop production.”
Candace in Wonderland also recently released the music video for “K.I.S.S.,” bringing this inner conflict to life through brightly colored wigs and masked patrons and employees inside a 50’s style diner. The music video takes the ego battle to a whole new level, incorporating a nostalgic twist that emphasizes the universality and timelessness of this inner battle.
