Metal, punk, and hardcore, oh my! Bucket O’ Blood Books and Records brings a dark edge to Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood for record lovers. And for those in the market for books or movies, the shop also specializes in a wide variety of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror subgenres.
Want something new? Bucket O’ Blood has recent releases, though the store also offers a solid selection of used goods at cheaper prices. Speaking of deals, look no further than Bucket O’ Blood’s version of bargain bins, such as a Buy-One-Get-One box of records. Heavy discounts, heavier tunes. Overall, Bucket O’ Blood’s more niche focus boasts a spectacular stock that attracts a specific customer base. No other shop in Chicago can match its vibe. But don’t get too caught up sifting through those glorious bins, as other merchandise is also available, like patches, $1 pins, and band tees.
An eclectic mix of band posters and creepy-themed decor adorn the walls, making for an overall edgy vibe. The shop’s alternative aesthetic sets it apart from your run-of-the-mill record store and reminds you that punk isn’t dead.

I popped in Bucket O’ Blood on a summer Saturday. The speakers set metal screamo songs as the soundtrack for my shopping experience. The aggressive and intense tunes kept me entertained, and that brutal angst was the exact opposite of the super-polite and friendly customer service from the front of the shop. Bucket O’ Blood Books and Records is operated by good hands.
The store, located at 3182 N Elston Ave, is open from noon to 7 p.m. daily. Creep on down for some gothic goods galore. Bucket O’ Blood also hosts events, like a book release and signing party on October 6 and a horror movie screening on October 18. Learn more on the store’s website, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
