Björk and Kasimyn Collab on Hypnotic “Atopos”

2022 saw the release of Björk’s tenth studio album, Fossora. Fossora would be the Icelandic musician’s first album release since 2017’s Utopia. The first single release from the album would be the hypnotic and chanting “Atopos”, a song that Björk recorded with DJ Kasimyn.

Björk is an absolute legend in the music industry. Born in Iceland, Björk would begin her music career at the remarkably young age of 11. In her teens she was part of an all-girl punk group called Spit and Snot as well as a jazz fusion band called Exodus. She would soon go on to front the band The Sugarcubes. Following their disbandment, Björk set out on her solo career, beginning with 1993’s Debut.

Art pop, electronic, Avant Garde and experimental are just some of the few genres that Björk’s music can be put under. Over a massive career, she has consistently pushed the envelope. With all the genres she treaded water in, it could almost be easier to state which genres she hasn’t experimented in.

The word “atopos” is Greek and means strange or out of place. In the song, Björk talks about feelings of disconnection and feeling lost. In it, she pleads for connection. She talks about the perils and dangers of miscommunication and keeps stating her need for honest and open communication.

The instrumental sees back and forth play between beats and clarinet. The beats will come in first-hard hitting and chant like, which are soon followed up by the melodious clarinet. The Guardian described the song as “an apocalyptic almost-dance track which pairs experimental techno with pulsing clarinets.”

Sonically a heavy bottom-ended bass world. We have 6 bass clarinets, punchy sub drilling, nesting and digging us into the ground.
