Grammy-nominated vocalist, Birdy, released her latest single on Friday, January 22nd. After announcing her highly anticipated fourth studio album, Young Heart, this track is the first to be unveiled.
After taking a five year hiatus from the world of music to focus on inner growth and to learn about herself, “Surrender” shows a shift from her previous, theatrical work. The track hones in on her life in self-reflection and discovery while embracing its own darkness and giving in to the process of blooming into something much more. Rather than entrancing her audience into a land of fairytale and wonder, her new track is much more stripped to the essentials. As a simple piano ballad, her signature voice sheds light into something far grittier and a courage to battle through all things real and filled with storm.
As we wait for her next album to drop, Birdy comments about Young Heart‘s shift in voice, “”I’m so proud of this album. My last record was a lot more theatrical…whereas this is quite stripped back – anything that didn’t need to be there, isn’t. There’s no decoration. This album just feels very personal. I’ve grown up a lot over the past five years and have experienced new things that have shaped my understanding of the world, but also of who I am as an artist. This album means a lot to me – I want to protect it.”
Young Heart will be out April 30, 2021 via Atlantic Records. Listen to the first single, “Surrender,” available on all streaming platforms:
