Just a few days ago, the world was finally graced with the “Barbie” experience. The world had been waiting for director Greta Gerwig’s take on the iconic doll for what felt like years. In fact, the first announcement for a live-action Barbie movie was introduced way back in 2009.
Now, with “Barbie” officially out in the world as of Friday, the world not only gets to see the adventures of Barbie and Ken but also gets to fully appreciate “Barbie The Album.”
With such hits as Charli XCX’s “Speed Drive” and PinkPantheress’ “Angel,” “Barbie The Album” is clearly the song of the summer.
The addition of Billie Eilish’s devastatingly beautiful “What Was I Made For?” only solidified “Barbie The Album”’s icon status.
In an Instagram post, Eilish spoke about her experience writing the song. She shared:
“in january greta showed me and finneas a handful of some unfinished scenes from the film; we had nooooo idea what to expect at ALLL… we were so deeeeeply moved.. that the next day we were writing and COULDNT shut up about it lolll andddddddddd ended up writing almost the entire song that night. to be real with you this all seemed to happen in a time when i really needed it. i’m so so thankful for that.”
Along with the song, Eilish shared a music video that sees the superstore rifling through doll’s clothes — all iconic outfits from her past. The nostalgia and melancholia of the scene perfectly encapsulate the song’s question of losing passion.
The song becomes even more powerful when — without spoilers — it is paired with the journey of Margot Robbie’s Barbie.
Keep up with Eilish on Instagram and Twitter.
